Our Story
Who We Are
Jaleel's House of Legacy is a non-profit organization that operates a mental health transitional facility. We provide services to young adults, helping them transition from hospitalization to back home successfully into their communities. Additionally, we educate our local community on mental health awareness and support.
Our Story
Jaleel’s House of Legacy was established in December 2023 by its Founder and CEO Marcella Turner. She lost her son Jaleel Turner on July 30, 2021, to suicide after dealing with a severe bout of mental illness for only a few short months.
Marcella also has an older son that was already dealing with mental illness that needed to be hospitalized once again after the loss of his brother. While her son was in the hospital, one of his doctors mentioned a “mental health transitional facility” as a possible option for him. She was floored because she had never heard about this type of facility and believed it would have been beneficial for Jaleel and possibly a tool that could’ve helped save his life.
Recovery
According to Psychiatric Times, the two highest-risk times are the first week after admission and shortly after discharge. Likely causes of increased suicide risk at discharge include the problems of incomplete recovery, return of insight leading to depression, re-exposure to life stressors, and easier access to suicidal means.
About Jaleel
Jaleel Omari Turner was the life of the party! He always had jokes and made people laugh, ALWAYS! He was charismatic, loving, giving, silly, funny, talented, and genuinely a nice young man! Jaleel was NIIIIICE with pen and paper and was able to express himself in a way that most were unable.
He was an athlete and ran cross country for Rancho Verde High and ended his senior year as the Inland Valley League Cross Country Champion. He also ran track and his senior year, they won the state title which led him to get a track scholarship to Mississippi Valley State University. He also wrote poetry and was an aspiring author. If Jaleel touched your life in any way, WE ARE THANKFUL!!! He meant the world to us, but we take comfort in knowing we will see him again...so we are at peace.
